The Cimmaron® Ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica ‘Cimmzam’) is a fruitless male cultivar of Fraxinus pennsylvanica. It is an exceptional tree for landscapes. It is attractive and cold hardy with a uniform growth pattern. It is a medium sized deciduous tree that grows to a height of 50 feet, with a spread of 30 feet.
The Cimmaron® Ash has well-spaced, strong, and upright limbs that make it a popular shade tree choice for larger landscapes. This cultivar’s reliable growth pattern and open, rounded canopy, also make it suitable for use as a street tree.
It is late to leaf out in the spring and also holds onto its leaves longer into the winter than other species. Its leaves are pinnately compound and dark green with lighter undersides. It provides a stunning fall display when its leaves turning brilliant shades of orange and red.
The flowers are yellow, green, and inconspicuous. The bark is an attractive gray brown color, which develops fissures as the tree matures.
Cimmaron® Ash is tolerant of cold, heat, and high winds. It is also moderately resistant to drought and urban conditions, as well as salt tolerant.
